Non-linear career pathways

Increasingly in the workforce the traditional linear model of career success —go to school, get a degree, land a job, and climb the corporate ladder— is no longer possible. Although this article positions non-linear careers as a path to greater fulfilment, the reality is that many will need to pursue non-linear trajectories in order to stay in the workforce if their role or profession is disrupted by forces such as technological, geopolitical or demographic transformations.

Building resilience through adaptability is central to non-linear careers, to maintain relevance in the dynamic employment and skills landscape. Professionals should focus on building transversal transferable skills, cultivating cross-industry relationships and redefining success beyond traditional metrics like titles or salary.

“Focus on developing soft skills that transcend industries, including critical thinking, communication, leadership, and problem solving. Pair this with a commitment to continuous learning through formal education, self-directed study, or on-the-job learning. Together, these form the foundation for successful transitions between different professional contexts and keep you engaged and growing throughout your career.”
