Problem solving is a sequence of skills: defining the actual problem, investigating what's causing it, generating options, deciding between them, implementing through complex and constantly changing reality, checking whether it worked, and capturing what was learned. Each is a different capability, and almost everyone is stronger in some than others. Few people know which.

The Systematic Problem-Solving Capability Profile maps where your systematic problem-solving skills sit today. About ten minutes of honest reflection gives you a structured picture across 17 competencies in seven phases, identifies your problem-solving style, and gives you focused development actions, calibrated to where you are rather than where an average person might be.

Most professionals build this capability through trial and error, accumulating hard lessons unevenly. This is the alternative: seeing which phases you carry well, which aren't yet developed, and where focused development will compound across everything else you do.

Your results open as soon as you finish. A summary report follows by email, and twelve months access to my.edaith gives you a guided Practice Pathway through the five capabilities your results say to develop first. Then the optional Calibrated Capability Profile adds the view of people who have seen you work, so you can see where their picture of your capabilities matches your own and where it differs.

WHAT THE PROFILE MAPS

  • Your overall problem-solving capability and how it distributes across seven phases
  • The specific competencies where you are strong
  • The specific competencies where development will have the greatest leverage
  • Your problem-solving style identified as one of seven distinct approaches, with detail on what it enables and where it may be quietly limiting your results
  • A development action for each of your 17 competencies, calibrated to your proficiency level and matched to a tool in Problem Solver: The Problem Solving Toolkit.
  • Optional: How the people you work with see each of your competencies against how you see them yourself, with their written comments summarised into themes rather than shown as written

HOW IT WORKS

With the purchase of the Capability Profile you will receive your unique access code by email. Complete the online capability mapping at your own pace; it takes around 10 minutes.

When your feedback round closes, your results gain the comparison and a feedback supplement is emailed to you.

FOR TEAMS

Teams can also build this capability from a shared baseline: profiles for each member, then re-mapping to show what moved. See For Teams. Volume pricing applies automatically at checkout. When enough members complete their feedback rounds, the team report also shows where the team rates itself higher than others do, and where others rate it higher.

Contact Edaith for team reporting pricing with volume orders, as well as additional resources to support team workshops and L&D programmes.

COMPANION GUIDE

The Capability Profile is paired with Problem Solver: The Problem Solving Toolkit. The Profile shows you where to focus; the guide provides the knowledge, tools and methods to develop in each phase. Both draw on the same body of research, and your Practice Pathway names the tool to apply for each of your five priority capabilities.

Frequently asked questions

Q: What is the Systematic Problem-Solving Capability Profile?

A: A professional capability mapping tool developed by Dr Tina Gallico that helps individuals evaluate problem-solving skills across 17 competencies and seven sequential phases. Completing the 10-minute form returns your results online, with personalised, evidence-based development guidance for every competency. A summary PDF is emailed to you within a couple of minutes, and the full report whenever you ask for it.

A: Professionals who want to develop with intention. Leaders who want to understand their own capability and read their team's. People responsible for capability who need a tool grounded in the academic literature, specific enough to design targeted development and credible enough to present to senior stakeholders.

For teams, individual results combine into a picture of where collective problem solving breaks down: whether the team excels at analysis but stalls at implementation, how decision making unfolds, and how well the team covers the full cycle.

Q: How long does the form take to complete?

A: Approximately 10 minutes.

Q: What aspects of problem solving are mapped?

The Systematic Problem-Solving Capability Profile maps the complete problem-solving cycle across seven sequential phases. Each phase contains multiple specific competencies.

  • Define: Clearly identifying the actual problem, who is affected, and what success looks like before any action is taken.
  • Analyse: Investigating root causes rather than symptoms, understanding system-level connections, and gathering information systematically.
  • Devise: Generating diverse solution possibilities and designing approaches that address root causes.
  • Decide: Establishing clear criteria, comparing options objectively, and making sound decisions despite uncertainty.
  • Implement: Breaking solutions into executable steps and navigating the organisational realities of making change happen.
  • Improve: Measuring whether solutions worked and refining approaches based on evidence rather than assumption.
  • Document: Capturing decisions, rationale, and lessons so the organisation retains and builds on what has been learned.

Q: How quickly will I get my results?

A: Your results open as soon as you finish, and the PDF is emailed within 60 seconds of completion (check spam or junk if you can't see it).

Q: What does the report include?

A: When you finish, your results open as an interactive online profile, with a detailed PDF to download and keep. Both include a capability summary across all competencies, a 7-phase profile, your problem-solving style from seven distinct patterns, personalised development guidance calibrated to your specific scores, your top 5 development priorities, and a visual radar chart.

For those with the companion book, your results also recommend specific tools from the Problem Solver Essential Skills Series Guide.

Q: Can I redo the form?

A: Each access code is single use. To better understand progress after development work, purchase an additional profile. 3–6 months between profiles is recommended to allow development effort to embed.

Q: How is this different from a personality test?

A: Personality tests describe traits that are largely fixed. This profile focuses on learnable capabilities that you can systematically develop. The goal is to understand your current capability and identify precisely where to focus development effort for the greatest return.

Q: Do I need the Problem Solver book to use this tool?

A: No. The Capability Profile is complete and immediately actionable on its own. The companion book provides deeper frameworks for those who want structured development support.

Q: Is team purchasing available?

A: Yes. Profiles can be purchased individually for each team member. For 25 or more profiles, contact us for aggregated team reporting and tailored volume discounting.

Q: How long do the people I nominate have, and what if they do not respond?

A: They have 14 days from the day you nominate them, and Edaith reminds anyone who has not answered on the fourth, eighth and twelfth day. Three answers are needed before anything is shown to you, which is what keeps individual answers anonymous. If fewer than three have answered when the 14 days are up, you can extend the round once by seven days, or nominate someone in place of a person who did not answer, or simply leave it. Leaving it costs you nothing: your own profile, your Practice Pathway and your certificate are unaffected, and no comparison is shown.

Q: What do the people I nominate see, and what do I see of their answers?

A: The people you nominate receive an email with your name, a link and instructions. The questions take about five minutes to answer: one per competency, two optional lines for comments, and a way to decline. They are reminded at most three times over two weeks, and declining ends the reminders. They never see your results or anyone else's answers. You see who has responded, and once at least three have, you see their combined view alongside your own for every competency. Their written comments reach you as a summary of the themes, never as written, and their names and email addresses are deleted when the round closes. A person who declines appears to you only as not having responded.

Q: When do I see the comparison, and can I see it sooner?

A: Your results gain the comparison when the round closes, 14 days after you nominate. Until then you see how many people have answered and who has not, and nothing else, because a picture built from three answers that later becomes five would only invite you to watch it move. Once three people have answered you can close the round early from your dashboard and see the comparison straight away. Anyone who has not answered by then can no longer take part, so waiting usually gives you the fuller picture.

Q: Does asking for feedback change when I get my certificate?

A: While a round is running, yes. Your certificate is issued when you finish every module in your Practice Pathway, and an open round holds it until it closes, so that what the people you asked said is part of what you complete. Closing adds up to three capabilities to your pathway, and those are part of it too. If fewer than three people answer and the round ends without a comparison, your certificate is issued as soon as you finish the modules you have.

Q: Is my data secure?

A: Edaith only collects your name (optional), email address, and your responses to deliver your results. Anonymised results contribute to aggregate benchmarking which you can opt in to receive. Individual data is not shared with third parties. See our Privacy Policy.

Q: What is my.edaith?

A: Your account for everything you have completed: your results, your Practice Pathway and your certificate, on any device. There is no password. Enter your email address and we send you a one-time sign-in link.

Q: How long do I have access?

A: Twelve months from the date you complete your profile. The PDF report emailed to you when you finish is yours to keep permanently.

Q: I cannot see my results when I sign in.

A: Your results are tied to the email address you entered on the Capability Profile form, which is not always the address you ordered with. Sign in with the address you entered on the form.

Your view, and theirs

Included with your profile, and entirely optional. Ask four to six people who have seen you work. Their answers are combined and anonymised, and your results show their picture of each competency beside your own. The bar is where you placed yourself. The circle is where they placed you.

Your own view How the people you asked see you Example results

  • Confirmed strengths You and the people you work with agree this is strong. Worth using deliberately.
  • Hidden strengths They rate you higher than you rate yourself. Capability you are not yet claiming.
  • Blind spots You rate yourself higher than they do. The most useful thing the round tells you.
  • Agreed development areas You and they agree this needs work, so up to three of them join your Practice Pathway.

Requesting feedback from others is optional. You see who has responded, never what any individual said, and their written comments reach you summarised into themes. Names and addresses are deleted when the round closes.
